The Tawny Frogmouth (Podargus strigoides) is an Australian species of frogmouth, a type of bird found throughout the Australian mainland, Tasmania and southern New Guinea. The Tawny Frogmouth is often mistaken to be an owl. Many Australians refer to the Tawny Frogmouth by the colloquial names of "Mopoke" or "Morepork", which usually are common alternative names for the Southern Boobook. Frogmouths are not raptorial birds... look closely for this camouflaged wonder

Tree Stump Orb Weaver (Heurodes turritus) Image: loboclerk via clubsnapl.com/forums This species of spider uses camouflage to closely resemble the bark of trees. During the day it rests by holding its legs (lower half of image) tightly against its own body. The head is just visible in between the legs (bottom right). The tall protruding segment is the spider's abdomen. At night, the spider weaves a large web to catch prey. The web is dismantled each morning.

In nature there are many ways to protect yourself from potential predators: armor, poison, noxious smell, size or speed, etc. But perhaps no form of protection is as cunning as camouflage. This is especially true among insects, whose body form has allowed for an impressive array of biological mimicry and deception. Some of these bugs might be indistinguishable from their surroundings, like the walking stick insect pictured here. Can you pick them out?   Here's our list of 11 amazing examples of insect camouflage. (Text: Bryan Nelson)

The Atlas Moth mimics the shape of snake heads to confuse predators. Attacus atlas is a large saturniid moth found in the tropical and subtropical forests of Southeast Asia. Considered the largest moths in the world in terms of total wing surface area, reaching upwards of c. 62 sq in. Their wingspans are also amongst the largest, reaching over 10 in. Females are appreciably larger and heavier.
